Late that year, Savage drilled scope mounting holes in the reciever. 1952 was about the peak production year for the 99, the EG was their most popular model, and the 300 the most popular chambering. The forend iron should have a recess in it, to fit the barrel lug, and allow it to be used as a wrench to assist in removing the barrel AFTER the action is opened.
